Do Kenyans need a visa for Turkey?

Yes. Kenyan citizens with ordinary passports need a visa to enter Turkey, and it must be obtained before leaving Kenya.

Turkey gives Kenyans two routes

  1. Conditional e-Visa. You apply online, pay by card and receive the visa by email. It is quick and cheap, but only available if you already hold a valid Schengen, US, UK or Irish sticker visa or residence permit.
  2. Embassy tourist visa. You submit a paper application in Nairobi with supporting documents. This is the route if you don’t qualify for the e-Visa, and it is the one most Kenyan travellers use.
  • Diplomatic, official, service and special passport holders from Kenya are exempt from the visa for up to 90 days within 180 days, according to the Turkish Embassy in Nairobi. This guide covers ordinary passports.

1. online e-Visa, step by step

If you qualify, this is the fastest and cheapest option. You need a Kenyan passport valid for at least 6 months, your qualifying Schengen, US, UK or Irish sticker visa or permit, an email address and a card that works online. Carry proof of your plans too: a return ticket, hotel booking and enough money for your stay.

  • Go to evisa.gov.tr, the official Turkish government site. Type the address yourself rather than clicking an ad.
  • Select Kenya as your nationality and choose your travel dates.
  • Enter your personal details exactly as they appear in your passport.
  • Enter the details of your Schengen, US, UK or Irish visa or permit.
  • Check everything, then pay the USD 50 fee by card.
  • Download your e-Visa and print a copy to carry with your passport.
  • At the airport, show the same passport you applied with, plus your return ticket, hotel booking and proof of funds if asked, the official Turkish government site.
  • At the airport, show the same passport you applied with, plus your return ticket, hotel booking and proof of funds if asked.

2.The tourist visa through the embassy and Turkish Route

If you don’t qualify for the e-Visa, you apply for a sticker visa in Nairobi. The Turkish Embassy examines every application and decides whether to issue the visa. Turkey has no express or expedited visa service, so plan your timing around that.

Turkish Route (Two Rivers, Nairobi) (https://visa.turkishroute.com/kenya/tourist-visa/) is the visa application office that handles applications from Kenyans with ordinary passports. It opened to help Kenyans in business, education and tourism apply for Turkey visas, and it was reported to be processing about 150 applications a day. At the office you hand in your documents, pay the fees and buy the required travel insurance.

If you are not a Kenyan citizen, you can apply at the Turkish Embassy in Nairobi only if you hold a valid residence or work permit in Kenya, and processing may take longer.

Documents checklist for the embassy tourist visa

Prepare every item in the core list, then add the documents that match your situation. All letters must be typed, not handwritten, and company letters need letterhead, a stamp or seal, and a signature from an authorised person whose name, job title and contact details are clear.

  • Original passport valid for at least 6 months on arrival in Turkey, with at least 2 blank pages
  • 2 biometric photos: white background, 2.5 x 2.5 inches, taken in the last 6 months, full face visible with no shadows and no glasses
  • Visa application form filled in English on the Turkish visa website and signed
  • Round-trip flight reservation. The embassy may ask for confirmed tickets before issuing the visa
  • Hotel reservation. If you booked through an agent or tour operator, get a letter showing your name and your check-in and check-out dates, signed and stamped
  • Travel insurance covering your stay, bought at the application centre
  • Bank statements for the last 6 months, original or attested by the bank, showing enough money for your stay. A business account needs a bank letter naming the signatories
  • Proof of assets, such as land, a vehicle, a house or a lease agreement
  • Employed: an original leave letter on company letterhead stating your job title, period of work, salary, purpose of visit, travel dates and anyone travelling with you, plus your last 3 months of salary slips
  • Self-employed or business owner: company registration documents showing your name and the company name, contracts, and proof of regular income
  • Retired: retirement documents and proof of income, plus the last 3 months of bank statements
  • Visiting someone in Turkey: a notarised invitation letter (Taahutname) with your passport number and full name, plus the host’s ID or permit copy, address and phone number
  • Someone else is paying: only a close family member (nuclear family) can sponsor you. Bring their original sponsorship letter, proof of your relationship and their financial documents
  • Travelling with someone who already has a Turkish visa: a copy of their visa and passport
  • Married couples whose names are not in each other’s passports: a marriage certificate attested by a notary

Optional extras:

  • your tour itinerary, birth or marriage certificate, and your previous passports OR travel passport stamps

Children under 18

  • A notarised consent letter drafted by a lawyer and signed by both parents if the child is not travelling with both of them
  • Original and photocopy of both parents’ passports
  • If only one parent has legal custody, a notarised death certificate or court decision showing who it is
  • The embassy can ask for more documents at any point. Handing in every document does not guarantee a visa, and the embassy can refuse an application without giving a reason.

Travel tips for Kenyans going to Turkey

A visa gets you to the border, but officers can still ask questions. These habits help.

  • Fly from Nairobi (NBO) to Istanbul, Antalya or Izmir, and keep your return ticket ready.
  • Carry printed copies of your visa or e-Visa, hotel booking, return ticket and insurance.
  • Show proof of funds, such as bank statements or a card with enough balance. The embassy lists about USD 50 per day of stay for e-Visa travellers.
  • Know your trip details, including where you’ll stay, for how long and why you are going.
  • Remember a visa doesn’t guarantee entry. Immigration officers make the final decision at the border.
  • Check health and vaccine requirements for your flights and any transit points.
  • Plan your money. Use a card that works abroad, carry some cash, and check the exchange rate before you go.

Budget Flights: Why the Cheapest Ticket Can Cost You More

When you book a flight to Turkey, the lowest fare is not always the cheapest trip. Many budget tickets come with long layovers, and those hours at the airport quietly add to your costs.

How long layovers drain your budget

  • Food and drinks: Airport meals are expensive. A layover of six hours or more usually means at least one full meal, plus snacks and drinks.
  • Airport hotels: If your layover is overnight or very long, you may be forced to book a room just to rest. That one night can cost more than the money you saved on the ticket.
  • Extra transport: Leaving the airport to explore or find cheaper accommodation means paying for taxis or trains, and sometimes you may need another visa or transit permission( if your transit in Dubai)
  • Tiredness: Long journeys leave you worn out, which can affect your first days in Turkey.
  • Risk of missed connections: If a delay makes you miss your connecting flight on a separate booking, you may have to buy a new ticket. The bottom line:
  • Save money by choosing a direct flight or a short layover, not by choosing the cheapest fare. A ticket that costs a bit more can still be the better deal once food, hotels and stress are counted.

Direct flights from Nairobi: Turkish Airlines flies direct from Nairobi (NBO) to Istanbul (IST), a trip of about 7 hours. Check the airline’s official website for current schedules and fares.

Beware of look-alike websites and fake agents

Many private websites and social media accounts advertise Turkey visas and charge far more than the official fees. Some are genuine agents who add a service charge, and some are scams.

  • The official e-Visa website is evisa.gov.tr, where the Turkish government charges USD 50.
  • For the embassy route, the fee list says no other fees are required. Be careful if someone asks for more.
  • Never send your passport details or money to anyone on social media who promises a guaranteed visa. No one can guarantee approval.
  • If you use an agent, ask for their fee separately from the government fee, and ask for a receipt.
  • When in doubt, confirm with the Turkish Embassy in Nairobi or visit the application office
