Istanbul is the city where two continents meet, where you can have breakfast in Europe and take a ferry to Asia before lunch. It’s loud, delicious cuisine, full of history. A few days is enough to fall in love with the city.

Start here. Most of the famous attractions sit close together, so you can do them on foot in one day.

1. Hagia Sophia

The icon of Istanbul. Foreign visitors pay 25 EUR for access to the upper gallery. Don’t make the common mistake: the Istanbul Museum Pass is not accepted here. It is open to tourists daily from 09:00 to 19:30, but it closes to tourists during prayer times, so check the timing. Arriving early in the morning, ideally right when the doors open, gives you the best chance to explore Hagia Sophia without the large crowds. 2. Blue Mosque

Beautiful inside and out, and free to enter outside, tailored around its five daily prayer times. There is no entrance fee to visit the Blue Mosque, making it a budget-friendly option for exploring. Dress modestly: cover your shoulders and knees, and women should bring a scarf for their hair.

3. Topkapı Palace

Home of the Ottoman sultans. One guide lists the combined ticket for the palace, harem, and Hagia Irene at about €55. Other sources quote different amounts for more info; link: https://thebettervacation.com/istanbul/topkapi-palace/

4. Basilica Cistern

An underground palace of columns and soft lighting. One guide puts the daytime ticket at about €38– €55. It’s a great escape from the midday heat. For more information on how to book link: https://basilicacistern-guide.com/tickets/how-to-book/

Explore the Grand Bazaar

Free to enter and easy to get lost in. Walk through its maze of shops selling jewellery, carpets, ceramics, textiles and souvenirs. And don’t forget to bargain!

One of the most enchanting ways to immerse yourself in the magic of Istanbul is to sail through its mesmerizing waters, where the vibrant cultures of Europe and Asia beautifully intertwine. Embrace the experience of hopping on a local ferry, which offers a delightful glimpse into daily life. Onboard, a captivating narrator brings the city’s rich history to life while guiding you along the scenic routes; stops with knowledgeable guides allow you to delve deeper into each destination. You’ll have an hour to wander, savor a delicious meal, or even take a bicycle and get delightfully lost in the breathtaking beauty that surrounds you. Remember to keep an eye on the time, for this adventure is one you won’t want to end!
